About Dr Francesca Sawer
I am a chartered clinical psychologist, specialising in paediatrics and child development. I have worked in some of the UK’s leading children’s hospitals and currently work at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Over the last 10 years I have supported thousands of children and their families, navigate illness, disability and mental health, and when it comes to our psychological wellbeing I believe knowledge and understanding are key. My passion is to help young people learn more about themselves in order to empower and equip them with the skills, strategies and insights to manage their mental health (as well as physical health), and gain confidence in navigating life’s challenges and hurdles in order to build resilience into adulthood.
After working in a children’s allergies service, I have developed a keen interest in this area, which in my opinion remains extremely underrepresented in terms of access psychological support. That’s why I’ve teamed with Dr Helen Allergy, to bring psychological support to more people and make it more accessible to those who need it.
Research shows us that children with allergies can experience higher level of anxiety, lower mood and reduced quality of life than their peers, yet psychological support for allergies is often neglected from children’s treatment plans.
I am passionate about flipping this narrative and giving children and their parents the tools needed to confidently take control of their life. To own their allergy and respectfully manage it, but ensuring that allergies are something to live alongside, not to be dominated by.
Allergy anxiety cannot always be addressed in the same way as other anxieties, as in most cases the worries associated with allergy are very real. However, this does not mean it cannot be supported. Learning ways of recognising anxiety and having practical tools and strategies to manage will go a long way in leading you and your child to a fulfilling life and not one ruled by fear.
Developing a compassionate relationship with allergies from an early age, leads to children feeling more confident and having higher self-esteem, which will more likely lead them into the life they deserve.
Learning that your child has an allergy can feel life changing, but this doesn’t have to mean life limiting. I can show you how.

Introduction to the Modules

Module 1
Psychological Support For Those Living With Food Allergies
In this module, Francesca @drfrancescas will explore the psychological impact of living with allergies and give tips to help parents and caregivers manage both their own fears around allergies, as well as supporting their children to manage their worries.
Module 2
Learning To Eat Out Safely And Confidently
In this course, Francesca will address the fears that hold us back from eating out and go through practical steps that you can work through in order to start eating away from the family home. She will talk about graded exposure plans, assertiveness and taking control of the environment, whilst moving to a position that she calls "safe uncertainty". She will give some practical tips on how to manage and explain why eating out is a huge part of addressing anxiety and living confidently with allergies.
Module 3
A Psychological Guide To Supporting The Introduction Of New Foods
Introducing new foods can be hard when your child lives with allergies, but a huge and often unspoken part of this is fear and anxiety, rather than safety. On this course, Francesca will help you to explore some of the things holding you and your child back from adding or trying new foods and help give you confidence to start.
She will also talk about some top tips for doing this in graded ways, strategies for ensuring and prompting positive mealtimes and some fun and creative ways of exposing children to new foods in playful ways.
Module 4
Starting School When Living With Allergies
Starting school is a huge transition point for all children. However, add allergies into the mix and this can feel like a minefield. In this module Francesca will talk about ways of navigating this process from the preparation, the first day and the ongoing relationship between you and school. Whilst covering some practical tips for managing allergies at school, she will also focus on addressing you and your child's worries and things to support a child's confidence that they can have a healthy and happy school life alongside their allergies.
